Description:
Some time after my husband died in Vietnam, I picked up a Polaroid camera to use as a means of grief expression. When I remarried, I continued taking pictures while raising two sons. When our younger son left home after college, my husband suggested I go back to school to obtain a degree in photography, which I did, and then I taught the subject at my alma mater. Through two battles with breast cancer, I was able to literally "see the light"--often when it might have been scarce in my world of hospitalizations, chemo, radiation and endless surgeries. Photography has been my continuum--I have been lucky, and yes, have exerted effort, to see my work appear on a postage stamp, in solo museum shows and in print and broadcast media. What I love to do most is to share that burning passion for the medium with others, and to introduce them to the absolute nirvana, especially, of Polaroid manipulations. That nirvana, however, was born in the darkroom, where I learned to "draw" images using silver halide crystals subjected to trays of undulating liquids. I sometimes say that cancer brought me to my knees, which is where I should have been all along. These days, I am fortunate to have a husband who also loves photography, and who has been with me as I struggled from one emergency room crisis to another. At this point in my life, I rejoice that I am in remission, and that photography provides a means for a sort of immortality, even as must confront death. It's all about the light, how you see, and how you might share what knowledge you may have. I find it nothing short of miraculous that when I am looking through a camera viewfinder, there is no pain, only joy. I sense that joy with others here as well!
