With all the notoriety given to Marley, the movie dog, it's time to pay tribute to the best movie dog of them all—the one and only, Asta.

Polo Anyone?

January 15, 2009

The morning is devoted to inspecting the trendy boutiques of Palermo Viejo which are clustered in a neighborhood of one- and two-story townhouses.  Many of BA’s up-and-coming designers have opened shops here.  The area is also brightened by international restaurants and bohemian bars.

After walking for hours, carrying around our finds, we drop onto the plush banquette at Mott on El Salvador, where we’re served fresh and inventive sandwiches along with delicious liquados, BA’s take on the smoothie.   Well sastified, we return to Recoleta to meet our friend, Cristina, who has promised to take us to Hurlingham, Argentina’s oldest polo club.

Some 20 miles west of BA, our driver deposits us inside the walls of the 73-hectare compound, which includes an 18-hole golf course, five polo fields, stables for 300 horses, 18 tennis courts including six grass courts, a cricket pitch, two swimming pools, three paddle tennis courts and an indoor complex with a gym, squash court and dressing rooms.  Cristina introduces us to our host, A., who waits for us inside the wainscotted foyer of the Victorian clubhouse.  A portrait of the Queen welcomes us to this privileged company.

We hop into A.’s jeep and drive to one of the far fields to watch his two sons practice for an upcoming match.  In Argentina, they play the man not the ball, so the action is furious and exciting.  Afterwards, we retire to the clubhouse patio for roast beef sandwiches and gin and tonics.

When was the last time you felt so civilized?

Actually, I was just sitting her flippin' freezing Michigan wondering where I could get my hands on a pair of those cool orange leg warmers. So how civilized am I?

With polo ponies they are usually wraps, not solid/one-piece type protection like a human leg warmer.  Think a soft and cushy ace bandage for horses.

Like I said, see how civilized I am?! If it gets any colder up here, I'd settle for shin tape.

I'm curious about the name of the restaurant, Mott. The C.S. Mott family is pretty big in Michigan (more specifically, Flint, but their foundation is pretty far spread). Wondering if there's a connection.  Went to the site to read their bios, but no mention.

I told SB that when we can afford for me to go back to dancing that he has to buy me some new leg-warmers and I got a groan and an eye roll, then he said "Trust me, fashion flops from the 80s aren't going to do you any favors".  That's my romantic husband!

Sitting in a cafe on a Spring day discussing Gongora and Valle Inclan while having a Campai bitter on the rocks, watching the young ladies -- and that after having spent a couple of hours in the Prado... now THAT is civilized (in a good way).
