These somewhat disgruntled-looking dwarfs were originally placed throughout the gardens in the fashion of the time. The villa is tied to the legend of the dwarf princess. The story goes that there was a dwarf princess and that her father surrounded her with dwarfs so she wouldn't realize how ugly she was. One day, when a handsome prince arrived, she realized her deformity and jumped off the wall. In their grief all the dwarfs turned to stone.

I love those Oncdoc.. there is a similar set of dwarves at the Palace in Saltzberg, Austria.. I had photos taken of me sitting in a pot of one when I was 21 and my daughter when she turned 21... They allowed us..... There is a replica of those dwarves at The Ringling Museum in Sarasota, Florida, near the former home of Ringling who was an art expert and collector... I rejoiced in seeing them and have been looking for a set of my own... The ones in Austria are in a park or former croquet lawn next to the palace where "the Sound of Music" was filmed .
