Haitians carrying buckets stand in line outside a food distribution center. I took this photo from inside and peering over the barbed-wire wall.

I took this photo in the Spring of 2008 prior to the recent Haitian earthquake, but this is Petionville, the area where the quake hit hardest. Because of rampant crime and an insufficient, untrustworthy police force, charities have to guard themselves against theft. In this instance, a large wall surrounded the food distribution center and warehouse and guards armed with machine guards stood watch at all of the entrances.
The line of Haitians waiting with their buckets for food extended down the road about 1 mile. I was told that many of them walked over 5 hours to get to the center. It was a heartwrenching site.
