Traffice Chaos

Traffice Chaos Times of London Traffic chaos is a feature of the Easter holiday so ingrained in the public perception that nowadays it springs to mind more readily than the lambs, bonnets and daffodils and other associations of former sunnier times.

I've gone to my farm in Kentucky for the weekend. It's a great place to relax, do a little hard physical labor, and forget about the rest of the world. If you don't have such a place, I highly suggest you get one.

In the meantime, here's a little something that I found for you to read with your morning coffee.

See you on Monday.

Farming the City

By Matthew Green

San Francisco Chronicle

If San Francisco resident Kevin Bayuk has his way, every unused plot of land in this densely packed city, from narrow, shaded alleys to concrete-laden yards, will be transformed into organic-food-producing gardens.

Bayuk and other urban gardeners with big dreams but little capital are striving to create a metropolis that can feed itself.

It's one thing to support local organic agriculture, as in the region's farms that sell their goods at farmers' markets. But for Bayuk, a 30-year-old landscaper and gardener who lives in the Haight-Ashbury neighborhood, a truly local food system means being able to walk down the block from your house to harvest a bowl of salad greens for dinner.

Just a thought for a product: some years ago I purchased a pair of Gurkha shorts from you with cross over strap waist. Following a misadventure in Belize, they are now history.

Not only have I been unable to find shorts with this type of waist, I think there would be a demand for trousers with the same waist configuration. I for one would buy them. If you can't get your supplier to produce them, do you have an idea where I could find same?

Sounds like another sensible idea coming from San Francisco. Others should take note . Seriously, what is it going to take in order to implement these sorts of ideas? How many people will have to get sick or worse. Someone on a news show the other day actually suggested that more of us plant a garden this year, to get through these tough times. Pretty radical thinking, huh? But it could be a way to get more people HOOKED on the idea of gowing your own, when they find it's safer, tastier and more economical.
Here's hoping.

I live in my own house and I'm fortunate (and grateful) to have a yard to plant veggies and grow a couple of dwarf fruit trees. I've been surprised and a little disappointed over they years how many people do not have an edible garden. I've been thinking of a couple of chickens for the fresh eggs. A garden with flowers, edible plants and veggies, a few gold fish, birds, bees, butterflies, lizards, dragonflies, and ladybugs (and an occasional small (very small) spider) is not a bad place to spend a sunny afternoon.

Even in a small apartment you should be able to find a sunny location for herbs and tomatoes. You could probably find a dark place to grow mushrooms (not just the "magic" kind).
