I've gone to my farm in Kentucky for the weekend. It's a great place to relax, do a little hard physical labor, and forget about the rest of the world. If you don't have such a place, I highly suggest you get one.

In the meantime, here is some hope for what once was lost.

See you on Monday.

I'm aware of buyer's remorse but, theives' remorse? ....what? we can't do the time, so we shouldn't have done the crime? Well, for whatever reason, it's good that the Dali painting was returned.

Now if only the thieves in the Gardner Museum Heist from 22yrs ago would show the world the same courtesy. I would LOVE to be able to see the Rembrandt they stole.

Romorse usually does not occur if you do the right thing because it is the right thing to do; not because someone is watching or someone will say something about it.

Not to be too negative about Human Nature, but I don't think the thief had remorse....just couldn't figure out how to sell the painting without getting caught....Glad it's back home, though, so everyone else can enjoy it.

I think Fishstein was in on it. An overworked, underpaid gumshoe exposed to a better life at an early age.  Bored with the lack of cases, had to invent one.  Hired a junkie to walk into a gallery and walk out with a painting. "How hard can it be? There's a c-note in it for you." A C-note.  Sound familiar? Had to have some other outside help.  Not your typical thief.  Wait a minute. Maybe he was all too typical.  Maybe the thief wasn't a junkie at all.  Maybe he was just some blond, tanned surfer boy who had read too many Travis McGee novels. Had enough of reading and acting the parts, he was ready for the big time.  "The whole world's my stage." That's the ticket. Fishstein and Typical.  Sounds like a plot right out of Manhatten, made for Hollywood.

Oh, what a beautiful morning!
Following the comments of a couple who have spent all of their time assisting the vulnerable in surviving the heat, there was a funny story of an eighty-one year old man who pushed all the buttons at an apartment entrance calling: "Mummy!"
Someone called and ambulance, someone the police and when they got there and found him, he was being served coffee and grapefruit by his ninety-nine year old mother whom he had not seen in decades.
Naturally: the naughty runaway boy welcomed home.

rings90 ~
"Heist…" very noir.

We knew a highly skilled thief who, embarrassed and embittered over having been caught shoplifting at a discount store, turned his talents to stealing more difficult and valuable items and planting them in an effort to implicate people he hated.
Beyond his own bizarre pathology, it was interesting to note that not all of the persons in whose houses or garages he stashed things, came forward after finding them.
He moved far away and nobody hears from him.

Speaking of C-notes:

TT:regarding yesterday...we are all replaceable.
Regarding today: it's always wonderful when something lost or taken is found. But that doesn't mean it will be the same. Sometimes we hold on too tight...learning to let go and have things as they are gives us a doorway to the future.
For whatever reason(?, no rhyme or reason) the Dali was stolen it is part of it's history now. It may be so protected now only a few can enjoy it. I, myself will never see it but the taint of how each of us felt about the theft will color our attitudes forever.

Sort of apropos of nothing, we have added a lot of trees to our yard over the last ten years, and the birds and animals love it.  Our initial expectations have gone by the wayside, however.  The birds claim the cherries even before they are ripe.  The dwarf peach trees have lots of fruit which the squirrels have claimed and eaten.  Interestingly, the birds love the cherries on the Japanese ornamental cherry tree (Yoshino cherry).  They never ripen at all and are inedible by humans.  So we have lots of birds and some fat squirrels - and we love it.  Actually the increased foliage encourages the birds also, and come autumn when the leaves fall, I know we will spot two or three birds nests.  Early in the week, I spotted two house wrens.  I'd never seen them before.  The male has a bright red head (no crest) which blends down into a tan body.  They are small and somewhat shy.  I hope they get over that.  I have one very fat robin who will dive in where I have mowed and stay there feasting as long as I don't get too close.  Yes, it is hot here.  And last Friday's storm with its microbursts of winds of 80-90 mph tore up the area pretty badly.  There are folks who still have no power and won't until the end of next week.  Fortunately (?) the high will drop into the eighties on Monday.  105° is predicted today.  We are off for a night in a boutique hotel in Alexandria and a really fine dinner to celebrate our 15th anniversary (which was actually on Thursday) and my 69th birthday (June 28th).  Fun!

I have always thought of art thieves as played by Cary Grant, as opposed to down and dirty money thieves more likely played by Steve Buscemi. Hence a kind of elegance that goes with the return of the piece, showing a true knowledge of the value.

Carolbabcock- Aloha. You refer I think to Coco Channel's quip from my post yesterday post Friday night cocktail hour. I find Coco intriguing given the times in which she lived and as a followup to the earlier topic this week of nonconformity.  And I will admit that I agree in a broad sense to much of what she says about style. On another level I adhere in principle to Ernest Holmes comment I read years ago that if you remove one drop of water from the ocean it would be incomplete. Though one may be not fit for certain roles or duties or relationships or one may act in folly or in what we call evil. I concede all of that. But my basic belief is that everyone's existence however flawed or seemingly unecessary or contrary to our understanding of purpose is a function of grace of which I have received abundant portions and make no claim in understanding.

Of course you might put David Niven in that mix as well as the aforementioned Travis McGee (I called my old boat The Busted Flush) and Dirk Pitt of literary fame (I call my Jag "Clive Clussler"). Sean Connery as the aging thief in Entrapment. "You stole my suitcase!" "I'm a thief. Sue me."

Sorry, gang, to go against the flow, but I don't think it was "thief's (or "thieve's", depending on how many were actually involved) remorse" at all!  I think it was a slap in the face to the owners!  Sort of a "Nah, nah, I got you!" type of thing.  They wanted to see if they COULD do it.  They weren't interested in OWNING it, they just wanted to see if they COULD get it!

BTW, how does one break into this "gang" thing you've got going?  I feel like the lone voice crying out in the wilderness "Here's logic!  Here's thought!"

Has no one read Time's 100 Most Influential People?  Does no one else have complaints about who was and was not included?  I mean, come on!  Sitting Bull instead of Sequoyah (Sequoyah being the creator of the Cherokee syllabary [or written language] was a leader in the TRUE sense of the word)?  His language made the Cherokee more literate than the European settlers of the region!  The Cherokee Nation accepted his syllabary and even created a newspaper utilizing it.  He was so respected among both European and Native Americans that the Sequoia tree was named for him.  Now THAT'S a monument to greatness.  Sitting Bull, on the other hand, was someone famous for killing General George Custer (how hard could that have been since they outnumbered them vastly, plus Custer, although a West Point graduate, was LAST in his class) then leading his people to slow and painful destruction for his actions.  THAT constitutes a great leader?

What about the inclusion of Freud and no mention at ALL of Jung?  What about the failure to include Jean-Baptiste Lully, creator of modern ballet?  What about the inclusion of Muhammad Ali instead of Jesse Owens?  What about the failure to mention Baron Pierre de Coubertin, who is credited with creating the modern International Olympic Committee?

WOW!  Could I go on about this!!!!!

Heist or caper, art theft seems to be one of the more innocuos crimes (unless you own the art), less offensive than littering or even shoplifting and since we now prosecute six year olds for stealing kisses, I would think that the art thief is regarded as a saint in contrast to those poor lads who think it is their responsibility or obligation to plant one on the rosy cheeks of some sweet, unsuspecting schoolmate of the fairer sex.

Inky- Strong arguments. Specifically Jung for me. I'll take a good ol' archetype over an oral fixation & anyone who knows my love for liquids know that is saying something. Influential sometimes means a powerful effect irrespective of its being "good or bad". To an atheist a religious prophet could be viewed negatively? A magazine with a political bent (most all of 'em) will generally generate some "are you kidding me?" responses. I've had them. I start with Jesus, Moses, Gandhi, and some of those toga wearing Greeks and several Single Malt Distillers and the Cuban guy @ The Silver Legacy who rolled me a superior torpedo cigar. I came back one day and he was gone.

InkyTink ~ I don't know that the author of the list took it all too seriously.  He celebrated his inclusion of the Wright Brothers because he got two names for one spot.  He includled Albert Einstein but excluded Immanuel Velikovski who taught Albert everything he knew.  The list was overly weighted to Western civilization but failed to include ONE cowboy, unless you consider Alexander (hi-ho Bucephalus) the Great a forerunner of the modern cowboy. Speaking of Bucephalus, how far would Alex have gotten without him?

I believe that most people, civilized or not, have a parent or a teacher at the top of their list.  As such, there is an abundance of influential people (yourself included) spending time in this village. I am not one of them.  I am here for the free food and drinks.

There was an interesting article on the Olympics in the Smithsonian magazine, crediting a Welshman Dr. William Penny Brookes of Much Wenlock as being the founder of the modern Olympic Games.  In 1994 Juan Samaranch made a pilgrimage to and placed a wreath on Penny's grave while making that declaration. I think Dr. Penny may have delivered several of Miss Hazel's Lambs before he relocated to the Midlands. Dr. Penny died and Pierre de Coubertin carried on the Olympic torch.

It is cruel on a Sunday to wake up ridiculously early.........................

PL.................glad your day was so lovely, you deserve it!

JANE.............................San Jose sounds beautiful, but you're right, way too hot. 70 degrees sounds like heaven. I have NEVER been able to get into The Blues Brothers.............my husband says I am missing a funny gene to not find it funny. I will make you a virtual cup of tea along w/ mine.......................I just got a new jar of honey at the farmer's market yesterday................be well and have a most relaxing Sunday....................

PL, Wonderful high of 66 degrees today....this is our usual summer weather. 70-75 as a rule...with nice cool ocean breezes. When the thermostat creeps up to 80, it's hot. Anything over 85 is rare here. I feel sympathetic for my sister living in D.C. and any of you living in the swealtering hot spots.

bebe, I agree, I want to sleep in, not awaken too early and especially not be able to go back to sleep. Not only is The Blues Brothers very funny...but the music is terrific with cameos from James Brown, Aretha Franklin, Ray Charles and many others. Your tea sounds fine and just the ticket. I just toasted a buttered biscuit under the broiler...one of my faves...I could eat biscuits all day long...your honey would have been perfect. I just ran out of my friend's honey...she keeps bees...so I'm the lucky recipient of fresh local honey and honeycomb. I'll share my biscuit with you.

Honor Roll

still thinking about today...
