I've gone to my farm in Kentucky for the weekend. It's a great place to relax, do a little hard physical labor, and forget about the rest of the world. If you don't have such a place, I highly suggest you get one.

In the meantime, speaking of climate change, here's a story with some teeth in it.

See you on Monday.

RY- After you yanked the tablecloth off the Stork Club table & we got ejected, we pub crawled down to the Aquarium and watched the Shark Show. Papa got this idea about an Old Man and his encounter with a shark at Sea. Coop told him it would make a great book. We all laughed.

Yep, SF,
hybrids vigor; I myself am actually an example.

Another sneaky backdoor attack by the Global warming folks; climate change is just one of the
natural cycles and will continue as long as the earth is.

The Blacktips probably started out as "one'" species, diverged into two ( or more populations
or what we humans refer to as races) and now find the opportunity to shuffle
and re-deal the ol' DNA deck.

Humanity, divided and catalogued for eons by skin, hair color and physical features, now
finds itself doing the shuffle and re-deal right here in this wonderful land of
ours. According to those who track and document this sort of thing, the average
American is getting darker in hair, skin and eye coloring due to intermarriage
and or inter breeding( forgive the eugenics-esque term but I couldn't think of
another).

"Among humans, race has no taxonomic significance; all people belong to the same
hominid subspecies, Homo sapiens sapiens."

Sea- 10-4 on the weather score. I got a call @ 4 and my crew had jumped a guardrail after leaving PA in Newburgh NY. Lenny called and said and he called 911 and they said where are you??? and he said in a truck in a ravine and it is snowing so hard I can't see any signs. Modern technology required he walk out with a knot on his head & flag down a tow truck. Needless to say, he won't be in Boston by 10 as expected. Meanwhile sharks are doing the horizontal water slide and "hybridizing" and listening to Jimmy Buffett.

Blue- as Tommy Robbins sez "Life is like a stew, you have to stir it frequently, or all the scum rises to the top.”

Don't know about climate change; it's January, it's very cold, there's snow and ice outside ..... anything different? Let me think; um, last January, snow and ice outside, cold weather, me complaining about it.  Fifty years ago, snow and ice outside, slipping and sliding, though then laughing about it and cold outside.  I think I missed the part of the climate change, at least here.

I don't consider myself to be extremely squeamish, but occasionally sharks are capacitated to creep me out. Took my daugher with me to Maui in 2005, when she was only 10 pushing 11 years old. Small group tour guide convinced everybody that it was perfectly safe to snorkel just off some jagged stone outcroppings, which my mind assured me that it was. Made the mistake of putting the facemask on, and we in our black wetsuits meandered off. Looked straight down, into the pristeen pure waters. 10 or thereabouts meters below us were dozens of hammerhead sharks, swimming as a wolf pack in ever-tightening circles, just as the old Subsailor guys at the Ohio Veteran's Home in Georgetown describe the WWII German U-Boats circling a convoy of freighters bound from America to England, in the "kill zone" past the range of U.S. ship or air protection, and when Great britain's heroic Royal Air Force, complete with American & Canadian volunteer pilots, were flying an exhausting 4-5 sorties a day, gallantly taking on Hitler's Luftwaffe, who were bound & determined to blast England's military & civilian populations into submission. The RAF heroes were just as Winston Churchill described over the wireless: "Never have so many owed so much to so few." I felt humble, because for a cold handful of seconds that seemed to last forever I knew exactly what true heroes must have felt, seeing formations of fighters & bombers that outnumbered you 20 to 1 coming out of the Brit omnipresent rainclouds, directly at London. Suddenly I felt virtuallu alive in that part of the war just before America was finally motivated to enter to assist England, AND the fallen French (as well as the rest of Europe). Afraid in a primitive & visceral sense, hammerheads altnough technically harmless were looking at my precious little girl as though she were a snack for the pack, coldly deciding if the risk was outweighed by the gain. And all I had to come to her assistance was a borrowed waterproofed camera & a meter-long stick, which the local guide would be helpful "...just in case we needed to shoo away a few annoying but otherwise harmless rainbow-colored footlong-

Interesting: the temp is 0° and the winds are calm at 0 mph but "out of the north."
I never understand how calmness can be said to have direction.

Interesting as well that humans, meat, place themselves into the realm of sharks, meat eaters, and then, describe an adverse encounter as having been with a rogue great white.
We only think that we run this place.

Two great white sharks swimming in the ocean spied survivors of a sunken ship. "Follow me son" the father shark said to the son shark and they swam to the mass of people. "First we swim around them a few times with just the tip of our fins showing." And they did. "Well done, son! Now we swim around them a few times with all of our fins showing." And they did. "Now we eat everybody." And they did.. When they were both gorged, the son asked,"Dad, why didn't we just eat them all at first? Why did we swim around
and around them?" His wise father replied, "Because they taste better without the s*** inside!"Now you know... Why Sharks Circle You Before Attacking

"Just the place for a Snark!" the Bellman cried,
As he landed his crew with care;
Supporting each man on the top of the tide
By a finger entwined in his hair.
"Just the place for a Snark! I have said it twice:
That alone should encourage the crew.
Just the place for a Snark! I have said it thrice:
What i tell you three times is true."

The crew was complete: it included a Boots--
A maker of Bonnets and Hoods--
A Barrister, brought to arrange their disputes--
And a Broker, to value their goods.

Funny what some people think about hybrid vigour. My Caucasian colleague is as hairy as an orang utan. Us Chinese are, to all intents and purposes, hairless. My son was jubilant when he eyed, finally, to grow hair in his armpits - we use to call him the one-hairded wonder. I, like 99.999 % of all Chinese women do not know what it's like to shave or wax our legs. My colleague says he wants his children to marry Chinese and often joke about my son marrying his daughter. I would feign shock and say, "OMG!!  ****, we would be related!!"

Back home it was cold, rainy, and overcast. My house sitter has called to say 2 pipes under the porch burst. I turned the water off before the freeze, but did not drain the pipes. Live and learn.

I'm in Florida...Tallahassee...74 degrees today and sunny. We went out with cousins to The SeineYard for shrimp, crab claws, grouper, and flounder. Totally delicious! Tomorrow we go farther south to Anna Maria Island below St. Pete for my birthday. Monday I expect to be planting my toes in the white sand of the beach. Oh Cripes, having ust lived through the 2012 primaries, please let's don't claim that the global climate isn't changing.  And who really care who is responsible?  As Mr. Perfect Right Dick Dick Cheney said, if there's even a 1% chance that Iraq has WMD, we have to invade.  So, if there's even a 1% chance that man may have contributed to or in any way affected the climate, we should act.  Not my idea - Tom Friedman's - although I am envious.   I know,  We're so wrong.

Have I told you about my shark and hot dog story?

When I was 12 and my brother 11, we used to go down to the pier with our fishing poles. One day with much excitement, we caught a small shark. I ran home to get a large plastic bucket for our prize. James stood guard over our foot long catch dangling from the hook just barely below the surface. We filled the bucket with ocean water and hauled our treasure home.

At the time my dad was a saltwater aquarium aficionado. He had a 30 gallon tank, and we begged him to keep our cool new friend. He reluctantly agreed. If we wanted to keep the shark however, we would have to collect 20 sand crabs a day to feed him. I don't remember how my dad came up with 20, but that was the deal.

It had been a couple weeks and our gray friend was doing well. We thought about releasing him. Collecting 20 sand crabs before breakfast with each passing day, took a toll on the excitement we initially felt. Digging up 20 seemed more like 100. And the sand crabs seemed to be on to us. They started forming clever escape plans when our hands would scoop into the wet sand.

There was talk among the kids that sharks would eat anything. Surely, a hot dog falls into this category. That morning we plunked one into the tank. He ate it! Success! We can go watch cartoons!

The hot dog would be our friend's last meal. R.I.P. Maybe the new hybrid shark can eat hot dogs...back to the comics for me.

Honor Roll

still thinking about today...
