I've gone to my farm in Kentucky for the weekend. It's a great place to relax, do a little hard physical labor, and forget about the rest of the world. If you don't have such a place, I highly suggest you get one.
In the meantime, here is a bit about the Apache Trail.
J. Peterman
From:CNN
I have a map, faded, but the old ''Coot' that sold it to me told me it was the only one that was real....you can have it...just enclose $49.95, cash only...and send it to :Box 123, Sepia Station, U.S.A.
(I sent my box tops to Battle Creek, and they sent me a plastic shovel)
Haven't blazed this trail. Podnuh...but one for the old Bucket List...reminds me of the old Road to Hana in the early 80's or Key West before improvements or a trip from Spokane to Boise & Reno to Virginia City or Tahoe or the Switchbacks of my boyhood mountain Walden Ridge. Motoring is where it's at. You test the strength of your familial relationships & your bladder on these adventures. Tally Ho!
May I suggest motor home travel? It contains, afterall, most of the comforts of home.
Closest I've ever been was dating a full Apache while in college and seeing pictures of his homeland. Breath taking.
O my! What beautiful countryside!
I love motoring. I love to drive, I love to be a passenger (usually), I just think its great. For years I have joked that Heaven for me would be in a new car with all the bells & whistles and Hell would be in an old unpredictable car with no a/c or radio. However, mountain driving would pretty much put the kibosh on the Heaven aspect for me. The mere word "Switchback" is enough to give me the vapors and when "summit" becomes your favorite word I feel my itinerary needs re-adjusting. I first experienced this feeling in Bavaria but it culminated when driving to my daughters wedding in Gunnison, CO. I can't really appreciate the incredible views because I am too busy trying not to completely freak out.
Its my loss, I know.l
I love the Western movies, mostly due to the horses and the clothing. I just love Western clothing. Wonder when the clothes will come back to the mainstream?
We did some treacherous switchbacks and U and S curves around the mountains last month going through Montana's Glacier National park, getting to Yosemite, and near the entrance to Death Valley. We were in Arizona but did not know about this place, or I fear we would have gone. My significant other loves all things cowboy. We will have to file this place under Going to Arizona Again!
Although we did drive many mountain-hugging roads with no guard rails and sharp drop-offs, I never had a moment of fear,as my driver is reliable and intense. I have driven some of those very twisty roads in Tenn. and N. Ga, too, so I know it is a matter of concentration. Not a time for the driver to be texting, cell phone gabbing, or even looking off in space at the scenery!!
We had a great taste of a Western town in Medora, ND, a town that is old but has been restored in the 1880's style of what you see in Western movies. It is known as Pres. Teddy Roosevelt's favorite Western spot and there is a national park full of wild horses, buffalo herds, deer, and prairie dogs right at the town.

Tortilla Flat, Arizona. Population 6. Yet one of those six is savvy enough to market the town on the internet.

I can't for the life of me guess which of the six it is. If I were to speculate, I'd select the old geezer seated in the front row, stage left. I know what y'all were thinking, but the kid in the black hat just wants to run off to Bollywood to be an actor. No, that wasn't a typo, it's Bollywood he fancies, with the elaborate sets, costumes, bangles, songs and choreography. There is nothing like it in Hollywood, much less Tortilla Flat. AZ.
And just so y'all don't think I am making stuff up (again), here is the web site...
http://www.tortillaflataz.com/ The town should have a dog. It doesn't. Every town should have a dog. Come here, Floyd.
Ahhh..in the 80's....Tortillaflataz what a back dirt road respite stop on the way to Lake Roosevelt for 2 week vocation...waterskiing spear-fishing.sun shining..wha whooooo..jogging on the "great dam," boating, swimming and just shaken the fresh lime squeezed into a Mexican Corona.....johnny wannamakers too boot with the good times rolling and ACDC on the radio blaring..all the swimmers from the college doing serious camping and staying at the Salt River Project bungalows...in Arizona Country Style.. wink wink...so exclusive...camping...high class..you bet....oh baby.private speed boat docks.....why I drove in an open sun-roofed yellow sportscar..from Arizona State..University through the back dirt roads..a 3 hour drive, mind you, on back "dirt" roads... so Lifeguard resiliant...all by myself after lifequarding...from the city of Scottsdale...just to get to a 2 week outback "getaway, what fond memories with friends and lake fishing...swimming what a work-out.! Seeing pictures today of the tourism of Lake Roosevelt..I can honestly say...I lived and played on Lake Roosevelt...in pristine clean lake water...in the 80's!
And Londo Bridge? Brick by brick
Too many songs have emerged from the agony and the losses of Normandy, Souvla bay (different war,, I know). Cannot sing them though without falling apart......
Hi all...I'm behind on my reading, trying to catch up with the village goings on. On wolves, I'd add a wonderful book I read in the 60s...Never Cry Wolf...by Farley Mowat. To that list of good French movies, I'd add Amélie and Breathless.
bebe...I want to go back and read your last post, not sure where it was. Every time I tried to post I'd find I was too late, the topic was closed, so I'd move on to the next topic...until I lost my way. If I remember, you were in a state of despondency....Mississippi? I don't know now...not being able to check, why did I think I was reading a personals ad? I should have paid better attention. Hope that's all it was...haha
I got my only speeding ticket in Arizona, driving down from Falgstaff heading back to Calif....the view was spectacular, but I should have paid more attention to what my foot was doing on the gas pedal. I cried. On an earlier drive from Sedona to Phoenix, I couldn't snap enough photos....luckily I was a passenger that time....just too bad I'm not a better photographer....but the memories are good.
