I've gone to my farm in Kentucky for the weekend. It's a great place to relax, do a little hard physical labor, and forget about the rest of the world. If you don't have such a place, I highly suggest you get one.

In the meantime, how is the jellyfish population in your part of the world?

OK OK, that was supposed to be , er, the ' wise guy ' comment... this, however, requires some diligence : t
always amazes me some of the comments, especially if they are not
affected!!  My family have just returned home after a holiday in
Andelucia in Spain and visited various beaches around Malaga.  My son
was stung by a jellyfish and the next day was covered in itchy spots, we
took him to a Spanish doctor and he gave him an injection.  We have
just spent the day in our local hospital, 10 days after the sting, my
son is covered in very painful blisters, he can't close his hands
because they are so swollen, he looks as though he has been scalded and
it is heart breaking.  He is on medication and has open access to the
ward in case he gets worse.  I am just hoping and praying that he
doesn't get worse.  If we had known about the jellyfish there is no way
we would have gone in the sea, there were no notices anywhere and the
jellyfish are so small, it is near impossible to see them in big waves.
So for those that make comments as if this story is insignificant,
please pause and think of those people that are affected!!!

Good morning RY and Lotlot...I have a feeling it's going to be very quiet today.
When we lived next to the waters down at our farm, it was common to see jelly fish wash up. The kids liked messing with the dead creatures, they 'pop' if you step on them, but I was always worried whether there were toxins left over.

The scariest jelly fish is the Turritopsis Nutricula, it's the Benjamin Button of the jellyfish world, and the ONLY immortal creature on planet earth, theoretically anyway unless it meets some untimely death before its full cycle. This involves getting to maturity, and then it undergoes "transdifferentiation" where it transforms itself back into a polyp stage, and then starts its life cycle all over again. I wonder if it holds the secret to the elixir of life. Anyway, the dreaded creature has been spreading from the Caribbean waters; I think it looks like something out of Dr Who

Does jelly fish ever feature in your cuisine? I like it, it's traditionally Japanese though the Chinese restaurants do have them occasionally. It's usually served as an appetiser, with some soy sauce, vinegar and sesame seeds

O YUK!!!!! Spring Fragrance~ If you are talking about the sort of jelly fish that wash up on our beaches - they look like huge blobs of snot. While I accept that children pick thier noses and eat the results, I cannot imagine eating them as an appetiser. That sentence came out a bit strange, I do not eat nose--picking children. Or jellyfish.

He will recover with the help of your family and the staff at the hospital...remind you to ask physician help...when needed.   ....my girlfriend was waterskiing in a bay region and fell in a school of jellyfish..90% of her body was stung..she survived..and the wounds healed..but it makes me more cautious of ocean and bay waters...I witness a shark attack off of Fripp Island..There has been so few jellyfish off the coast of South Carolina...so few..seen....in 15 years..I have not seen many..but Rehoboth Beach 1000's of jellyfish..there..

The Costa del Sol nude beaches were the most dangerous on a trip I took to that wonderful corner of the world. Some dangerous things should be left under cover.

Being landlocked, we don't have many jellyfish of the true invertebrate type.  That being said, we do have politicians, who give excellent imitations of jellyfish. Everytime there is a (if you'll pardon the pun) sea change in public opinion it seems their "stiff" resolve to address the issue in one way and one way only does a significant bend.  Indeed, catch them in an indiscretion of any type and just watch them turn into helpless blobs of protoplasm from the shallow end of the gene pool...waving this way and that ("I didn't inhale." and "No!  I absolutely did not have sex with that woman!" being two prime examples). I only wish they would wash ashore somewhere else where the children would pop them and that would be that.  In the scheme of thing, we would be fortunate if they came back as diatoms and did something useful for a change.

Chef Deb~ Jellyfish are to the ocean what Canaries are to the coal mines in days gone by. The are opportunistic feeders, and the prey of other eaters in the food chain. If the Jellys are abundant, it may be because there are links missing in the food chain. That may,or may not, be the reason they are arriving in large numbers.  I just hope they are not from another planet, and will one day walk the Earth, calling us disgusting blobs of vertibrate

Ginger, I bet that if you put pennies in your fountain, the jellyfish will stay away ;) and (just a suggestion) it might be a good idea not to think of politics while laying rocks...I've found it can result in smashed fingers
TT~Thank you for warning us of the dangers of nude beaches...the images that floated through my sea of imagination sent fear to my...well, as you so boldly put it, sphincter.

In my little corner of the world, jellyfish do not exist. But, we are plagued now, (in whatever remaining pools of water remain) with blue green algae. Extended amounts of sunlight and high temperatures cause this natural bacteria to bloom and exposure may result in respiratory, dermatological and intestinal "issues". Still, the threat of algae pale in comparison to that of jellyfish and unsightly nude beaches...
Folklore has it that, despite blue green algae, nudists can appear on local beaches when meteor showers appear in the summer sky... *shivers* ...

On the lighter side of jellies (how much can they weigh, really?) - jellyfish don't
live a long time - only two to three years - the round top part of them is known as the "bell"and the movement they make is called "pulsing". In facilities where they are displayed, they are kept in cylindrical tanks because they move in only one direction and if put into a rectangular tank they will get stuck in the corners!

We speak of a flock of seagulls, a school of fish, a raft of sea otters, and a
smack of jellies. Just trying to take a little of the sting out of the topic.
