I've gone to my farm in Kentucky for the weekend. It's a great place to relax, do a little hard physical labor, and forget about the rest of the world. If you don't have such a place, I highly suggest you get one.

In the meantime, this article might make you feel better about your eating habits.

My big meal while watching the Olympics today:

Bean soup.

The most athletic thing I did was cook it.

Made from an old secret family recipe.

Delish.

My good wife asked her usual question:

Where do I keep my old secret family?

Talking about food and Olympics, I understand McDonalds had an ill conceived marketing program in 1984 when it promised free burgers for every model America got. But competition had been cut out that year with boycott from 14 Eastern bloc countries and allies, including the Soviet Union, Cuba and East Germany (but not Romania) boycotted the Games. For differing reasons, Iran and Libya also boycotted. Ouch!! It seems McDonalds got really hurt...

Good morning, dear villagers. The coffee is on for insomniacs/early risers. It's 8.07 here, so a reasonable time to be considering breakfast. Porridge with honey, anybody? You have to eat something so you can take all those damn pills.

Good morning Hazel! It's 5.40 pm here and son wants an early dinner. The Aussies call it tea and when asked in Grade 2 what time he has tea, my son said about 3.30, tea being mid day snack to him/us. The teacher exclaimed, "Wow! That's early!". It was many years later we understood why.

When I was growing up in Singapore, and fresh milk wasn't something we were used to, we used condensed milk in our porridge, which we clearly defined as "oats" porridge. The term porridge itself meant congee (rice porridge) to everyone. I am amazed someone in Singapore has actually used oats in a recipe to simulate congee...if you ever feel adventurous enough, give it a go!

Off to dinner now...someone told me of this new Korean restaurant :)

Have a great day villagers

Good Morning All .......

MISS HAZEL:  Porridge with Honey sounds Great !!!  Maybe a half cup of Raisins per bowl as well ... And some shredded Coconut, and a handful of Chocokate Chips ... Maybe even a Tablespoonful of Peanut Butter ... a few turns of the Spoon and its ready to eat !!! Good for a halfaday's work and warmth ....... Only Pills we take around here are Vitamins and Minerals, and the occasional Aspirin .......

On occassion, we might sprinkle some Wheat Germ on top of everything else in the Oatmeal, especially those of us who are fond of a Shot of Heavy Cream in it too ...

Kretschmer's Wheat Germ ....... Always makes me think of Arthur Godfrey .......

A typical sumo wrestler eats a daily diet of 20,000 calories. Sumosize is not allowed in NYC restaurants as it is certainly a dietary Sumocide for the average samurai.

Bean soup! Haven't made it in along time… don't need to, a local restaurant offers it on Wednesday which happens to be 15% off for seniors day.
Friday we got all hopped up on homemade salmon croquettes at lunchtime and napped and watched the olympics all afternoon. It was nice.

You can go a long time these days without hearing 'Arthur Godfrey.' I wonder how many people know what a big deal he was before he got too big for his britches.

I suspect it's going to be a quiet day today? Let me share a joke that popped up in my inbox, it's titled "CULTURAL DIFFERENCES"......
Gotta state a disclaimer .... no offence intended!

Tokyo, Japan:
A man accidently tore a girl’s short miniskirt in Tokyo . Before the guy had a chance to apologize, the single lady took a 90 degree bow, then said: “I am sorry to give you trouble! The quality of the skirt is not all that good.” Then she took out a pin, put the skirt back together and left.

New York Time Square, New York:
A man accidently tore a girl’s miniskirt. Before the guy had a chance to react, the single lady pull out a name card, gave it to him and said: “This is my lawyer’s business card. He will contact you about this sexual harassment. It is better that you prepare yourself, then we will see you in court.”

Paris, France:
A French man accidently tore a girls’ miniskirt. Before the man opened his mouth, the young single lady said with a smile: “If you do not mind, a red rose can represent your apology.” The French man bought her a rose, then they went to a bar, and lastly, they went to a small hotel discussing what was in the miniskirt.

In the Church Square by the Thames, England:
An English man accidently tore the mini skirt of a young single lady. Before the English man opened up his mouth, the young lady covered her tore spot, then said with a blush on her face: “Do you mind take me home sir? I live very close…” The English man took his jacket off, put on her shoulders, call a cab, then took her home safely.

ChongQing, China:
a man accidently cut open the miniskirt of a young lady. Before the man said anything, the young lady slapped the guy, then: “You, the sex maniac. Dare to take advantage of me, I will send you to the labor camp…”

Ximending. Taiwan :
a man accidently tore a girl’s short miniskirt. Before the guy started to speak, the girl smiled and said: “We have not come up with a price yet, and you are going to inspect the merchandise?”

Hong Kong :
In the Time Square of Hong Kong, a man accidently tore a girl’s miniskirt. She was only 18 years old. Before the man opened his mouth, the girl screamed: “XXX your XXX, you think I am the cheap close out item on the street? Watch out, I will find someone to peel your skin.”

Korea :
On thestreet of Yinchong, a man accidently tore a girl’s miniskirt. Before the man speaks, the girl gave him a roundhouse kick, then said: “Don’t you know that I am a second degree black belt in Tae Kwan Do.”

Bangkok, Thailand:
A man accidently tore the miniskirt of an 18 year’s old girl. Before the man started to apologize, the girl said with a Buddha hand gesture: “No worries honey, ……we all men.”

Spring--In downtown New York City a man accidentall tore the miniskirt of a young woman.  She turned, kicked him in his privates, took off the skirt, wrapped it around his neck and began to choke him while screaming "Call the cops! Call the cops! He's a rapist!"  Sigh....such a violent society we live in.  Guess he should be glad she didn't shoot or knife him!

lotlot--I'll trade a recipe for three bean soup for your bean soup!

Miss Hazel--Porridge in Wales sounds terrific!  Anything (within reason) you want to put on it is fine with me.  Have you ever tried brown sugar?  That's nice, too!

Bert--Oh gosh!  I remember that skit!  Does that make us hip, or just old?

TT--Good morning Samurai-san!

Ivan, I hope your Sabbath was enjoyable...welcome back!

Stoney---how are you my man?

Oops, almost forgot today's topic.

Athletes do seem to eat funny things, but their bodies know what they need.  For example, all the bananas?  He needs potassium for his muscles to continue to function (as well as his heart).  All the carbs?  My trainer (who is a body builder (and looks beautiful as compared to the muscle bound males--she competes in the poise and grace class) will stoke up on protein before her workout and eat carbs afterward...which is the opposite of what the trainers usually recommend.  Her body just works that way.  She actually GAINS weight on a low carb diet!  She has to have carbs to lose the weight and have the strength to gain muscle.  Go figure.  It is what your body tells you it needs that causes cravings.

I will temper that by saying many times when you think you are hungry, you are really thirsty...so try water first if you are hungry.  If the hunger pangs go away, you were actually thirsty.

Think I'll go get some green tea.....

Salmon croquettes sound perfect for a Sunday morning too. Zealous fisherman in the family we have had some wonderful fishcakes this summer (of course, along with fabulous fried, broiled, grilled, sauteed, seared....). What a wonderful healthy thing....why is it I feel as if someone brought me a piece of prime rib I would be their slave for life?

Relax, enjoy your day, eat hearty.

Love & kisses to BEBE who (sob) starts school tomorrow!

Hello, mid-day in EST north GA! It is sunny and lovely out here on a Sunday. Slept til 9, breakfast by 10, so after coffee, orange juice, scrambled eggs, sausage, toast with homemade peach preserves, now I feel fed for the day until a yogurt snack about 2:00, then the steaks for supper at 7.

Went to Harry's Market, Whole Foods in Roswell yesterday for grillable cheese and steaks. Looking for Yanni cheese to grill, but they had only the similar Halloumi, the sheep's milk grilling cheese of Cyprus by Mt. Vikos brand. Usually, Harry's has any kind of fruit, veggie, meat, seafood, or cheese you can name, but the mgr. said she would order some of the Yanni...to check back in a week. ( It is an hour's drive south of us, so I don't drop int here often.) The steaks are another story.

Looking for Flat Iron steaks, but the butcher did not want to cut them...and at $15.99 lb. I did not want to press him, so settled for rib eyes at $22.00 for both of us. They had prime rib, porterhouse, filet mignon, and any other kind you might want. It is hard to get out of there without spending a fortune. Their prepared food area is huge, too, so many folks come to fill up on everything from pizza to BBQ to crab legs to a whole hot table of veggies, and then a long 10 ft. table of just different kinds of olives!

I keep bananas and often have one a day, as well as a tomato somewhere along the clock. These homegrown tomatoes that are available from the local farmers now are sooo much tastier than the grocery store tasteless variety. Just having a tomato sandwich on wheat bread with a dab of mayo is a treat. Sometimes I put a slice of white cheddar or thin slice of onion on it, too.

Enjoyed the article above about the eating and feeding of the Olympians. So much to admire about those dedicated athletes! I can root for any nation's contestant when you see them try so hard and seem to give it their all. The British heptathalon winner is a real joy to see in her 7 events! I am keeping the Olympics on all the time, and trying to see as many events as possible. It appears that UK is doing a great job as host nation!

Bebe- I feel for you, going back to school this week! I am deeply grateful to have put in my 30 years and be out of the system here. Hope you have good kids, cooperative parents, and wise administrators this time. Bless you!

Ginger - Drinking water before eating seems to work well for eating less. Good idea. Also, thanks for the video on the life-saving process. More need to see that.

Lotlot - Bean soup sounds fine. I have made white bean soup recently from navy beans and put in chunks of sweet ham....It was yum. Hope yours satisfied.

Bert ,Spring - Yes, cheeseburgers and other sandwiches at McD's now under 400 calories.....They are trying to hear the call for lower calories, less fat, and what it takes to be/appear healthy. The customer has spoken by going to Subway and buying more of Jared's choices where the low calorie count is printed on their napkins. The good ole system of free market competition is alive and well again. Wendy's too, insisting on fries with the skins still on them,a nd smaller portions on the 99 cent menu.

Spring - Your skirt-tearing stereotypical skits were amusing. I'm not sure about that scene in Atlanta, but it could be between the karate chop gal and the one who has her lawyer on speed dial! However, most Southern gentlemen I have met would profusely apologize and offer to have the skirt repaired or replaced.

Hazel, Ivan - Morning porridge sounds like oatmeal with brown sugar and raisins at my house on a cold winter morning. I never think of oatmeal for the summer, as it is so hot and cozy. I have put most of those ingredients in at one time or another.....honey, brown sugar, raisins, chopped dates, granola, chopped walnuts, but not the chocolate chips. Come mid November, I will try it.

As for the topic, our own eating habits, now that I have returned the grandchild to her mother, and am back to my own schedule, I am back to small portions of healthy foods, and 3X week workouts at the Curves gym. Ever trying to get the bod smaller and live as long as possible. ;--)

Wishing a healthy, good day and coming week to all Villagers!

Bebe--I like your idea of your "portfolio" for the meetings.   At the latest establishment that I taught, however, the directors insisted on inter-active meetings that concluded with activities they thought would solidify what we took away from their presentations....boo.......hsss.....The only thing we took away was renewed repugnance toward the current thought in modern educational circles.  Moose--I'll be glad to have you back on a more regular basis again, you've been missed.  And your shopping trip has me salivating! As far as the body craving what it needs I can only say that when I've been really ailing and poorly all I want and can think about is a plain unadorned baked potato.  And afterward I truly do begin to feel better.  A couple years ago my daughter went to England and got ill shortly before her return home......she said the only thing that made her feel better was a jacket potato.  It must run in the family.  Once I get that potato in the system I'm definitely on the road to recovery.  So, I would have to say that athletes who can recognize a crave for a healthy food and can get it should give into it.
