The origin of Valentine's Day and its patron saint is shrouded in mystery. Although the day supposedly was established by Pope Gelasius I in 496 AD.

Then again who cares about history today anyway.

Today is about romance.

And nobody said it better than Rodgers and Hart:

"My funny Valentine
Sweet comic Valentine
You make me smile with my heart
Your looks are laughable, unphotographable
Yet you're my favorite work of art..."

And nobody put more feeling into the music and words than one Chesney Henry "Chet" Baker, who played the trumpet and sang more than a little.

"Is your figure less than Greek?
Is your mouth a little weak?
When you open it to speak, are you smart?"

Chet made it his signature song and re-invented it every time he played it.

In James Gavin's Book, "Deep in a Dream," he tells the story of how Carson Smith, bassist for the Gerry Mulligan Quartet, found this then-obscure piece in a songbook.

Gavin writes: "...he played the tune as written, stretching out its slow, spare phrases until they seemed to ache. His hushed tone drew the ear, it suggested a door thrown open on some dark night of the soul, then pulled shut as the last note faded..."

"But don't change a hair for me
Not if you care for me
Stay little Valentine, stay
Each day is Valentine's Day."

Maybe the real reason he loved the song so much is because he was less than perfect himself — to put it politely.

I've always liked what he said about, perhaps, a more technically proficient trumpet player:

"If I could play like him, I wouldn't."

Chet Baker played like no one else; his solos were often better than the melody itself.

This is one of his best performances of his favorite song.

Happy Valentine's Day everyone.

J. Peterman

Valentine's Day Poem for errant lover~
'Tis not that I am weary grown of being yours, and yours alone.
But with what face could I incline to damn you to be only mine?
You who some higher power did fashion, by virtue and by inclination,
To be the joy of, at least, a whole nation.   Anon

Which is your favourite romance story couple? I like Noah and Allie (?) of the Notebook.  Especially at the end where both lay down together and they (to me it seems so) willed themselves to die together. Huuuushhhh....I would love to leave the world like that!

Does anyone here have a personal love story that seems to have some divine intervention, that air of synchronicity or happy coincidence , like the recent story of this couple who found each other after 30 years unknowing that they first connected through a message in a bottle between a then 6 year old boy and a 15 year old girl?

Watching the most enjoyable Any Human Heart on Masterpiece last night and seeing my wife tucked beneath her new comforter with the cappuccino cups, my Valentine's gift started off the holiday perfectly along with the chocolates from the B&B with artwork drizzled on the exterior. Tonight our bottle of Pinot Grigio awaits. Dying an incurable romantic beats living as a cured one I suspect.

Happy Valentine's Day to all. Yes, it is nice to have a day set apart to focus on those we love, whether spouse, family members, or just those we are grateful to have in our lives!

I lived alone 10 yrs. after my husband died in 1995, but in 2005 met someone new...Actually, the brother of my 8th gr. boyfriend. He was single/divorced, I had been widowed for 10 yrs., and we found each other online and began with Classmates emails, then to phone talk, and finally, a visit of 350 miles between us. He drove to me town and we met, had lunch, and clicked. Now, nearly 6 yrs. later, we are good companions, travel mates, and best friends, as well as heart-bound. We look after each other, enjoy each other's company, and like most of the same politics and movies. Of course, he is more about Westerns, and I like sci-fi, BBC, and mysteries, but we compromise and alternate watching each other's films. We both read a lot, but he is more into biographies (Churchill, Truman, etc.) , and I am more into mysteries, etc. - well, you see the topics above.  I feel fortunate to have had several love stories, two good husbands, and now a good significant-other partner. for music, we like the Oldies, Willie-Waylon-and the Boys, Johnny Cash, specifically, "Ain't Nothing I Can Do About It Now!"

I am also grateful for my two grown kids, and outstanding 8 yr. old granddaughter! Valentines or heart-felt thanks go out to them, too! Then, I think of all of my friends, some even from childhood, high school, and over 45 years! Tonight,  I get to have a sumptuous meal at the Woodbridge Inn, Jasper,  GA, and a glass of two of Pinot!  It's good to have a day to celebrate.

aTo all the wonderful ladies here in the Village, my love and affection. You all are super. A brief story. About eight years ago my maternal aunt died. She and my uncle had been married over 60 years. My uncle, who turned 90 last month, was alone in the Asheville, NC retirement community where they lived, though he startyed taking dinner at the main building and got involved with bridge and dancing. And he had his golf buddies (he still golfs 2-3 times a week). After a hear and a half, he wrote me a letter, saying he was writing me not as his nephew but in my capacity as a minister. He wondered if it was alraght to be in another relationship, to even date. Would it be denegrating his marriage? I wrote back and told him that of alkl people he was one who was skilled at marriage and relationships; the length of his marriage spoke to that. For him to have another relationship was not just reasonable but would be a monument to his marriage. Within a couple of months he not only was seeing a lady, but had moved her into his house. At that age, they do not marry -- to do so means one of them would lose their Social Security.  And now, several years lkater, they are still going strong.  I'm betting on him to be the first person in the family to make a century.

Tommy T, you are right about being romantic and you should not have it any other way.
We enjoy dinner with candle light and wine 4 or 5 nights a week. and enjoy either romantic music or some good mellow jazz with our meal. After 45 plus years togrether and almost 20 of those retired we have became closer after retirement. My wife will often tell me we do a good job of spoiling each other and I wouldn't want to change.
Here's wishing a most happy Valentine's day to all the smart and charming ladies that frequent Peterman's Eye.

Happy Valentine's Day
everyone!
We make a pretty big deal of it around here and a devil's food layer cake with white frosting and cinnamon hearts has been made for me just like when I was a little boy.
We, the two of us, are better at intimacy than romantic gestures: a little extra patience, make something nice, listen a little more and slow everything down.
We actually spend less than we did when we had less... money, that is.

Bert - Sorry your PC has the hiccups!! We are getting your messages 2 or 3 times! It is kind of you to wish us well....and we appreciate your Valentines' wishes

! Somehow, it is still an oddity to most males to find intelligent females!! Guess what!? Many women are actually as smart as men! Revelation!! Women can type, cipher, and build bridges! We are even smart enough to live  our entire lives without males, unless we need some offspring! Sorry to be so in-your-face about this, but we gals get somewhat weary of being treated like smart pets.....Many of us are actually wise, philosophical, and assertive. Do you find many aggressive women in the legal field?? I am all for men, smart, sensitive ones who have some sense of equality as humans!!

I think the blonde jokes are all written by men, and the plots of the comedy Westerns that equate all women with the "ho's" in the saloons!!  Sorry to  give you  this fallout, but I just had to watch the :free on Xfinity, " Western, " The Great  Scout, and Cathouse Thursday" with Lee Marvin and Strother Martin, Robert Culp"!!  I was so incensed for all females that such a movie was ever made, that I have  been seething ever since!! Women have in many situations, been treated like a commodity!! I am still angry about the Biblical patriarchial attitude of woman as property!! Apparently, the Muslims still feel that way!! Do we need another reason to wipe those a**h^%&  off the face of the earth!!??  They can divorce, mutilate, accuse, or kill their women for what ever cause they deem important!! Where is Valentine's Day for them???Ohhhh!! Yes, I am stirred up!!! In the detective series, those murder series, and the cold case files, it is nearly always a woman who is the victim!!! Just because we were made less muscular, not as strong, and smaller, is it right that we should be the victims in most of these violent case? Children and women are the victims!! What is wrong with that picture??!! We are still up for pleasing men to be allowed to live...and that is wrong, wrong, wrong!!! How can we ever become an advanced human race with that kind of track record?? Are others as incensed as I am????  Sorry, I realize that is not an appropriate Valentine's Day entry.....I am actually grateful for my life..now.    But, what about all those women in burquas and saris who are treated like dogs??

Mooseloop~ Men and Women with IQs above room tempurature know that women take second place to no one in anything!  I regret that you feel so put upon by just slightly less than half of the population. That's a heavier load than anyone should have to carry.

Women, with microscopic help, concieve us, create life, carry us, bear us, feed us, develop our character, teach us, bear the load when relationships fail, shape our attitudes, excel in every discipline I know anything about and in the end outlive us by seven-eight years. The women in my life take second place to nobody, nothing, none, zilch, zero!

I don't expect to change your mind and this may not be the appropriate time and place but I will not by my silence leave the impression I in anyway agree with you.

I apologize for the barrage of negativity on such a lovely day as this Valentine's Day...The crime stats just got to me that it seems it is usually a female who is the victim!! or a child! I know wars take out our men, and that is not right, either. In fact, the most common shooting around our city is young men on other young men. But, you check out the Law and Order, 48 Hours, Cold Case, Closer, NCIS, etc. shows and notice how many begin with a victimized female. Doesn't that set up an atmosphere of expectation for those about to find a target for their crime? Not anyone here, but just in society in general? I know this group is most enlightened and benevolent in the Eye Village. Do you think the TV and movies contribute to the problem with their hundreds of stories about ways to hurt others?

Re: women in saris and burquas not being educated; should not then education be the primary goal there, instead of killing and bombing? I was just thinking as long as the men there like the system of suppression of the women, they cannot understand what Western civilization has to offer. No wonder they want to destroy the West.
