The Bionic Eye

September 02, 2012

I've gone to my farm in Kentucky for the weekend. It's a great place to relax, do a little hard physical labor, and forget about the rest of the world. If you don't have such a place, I highly suggest you get one.

In the meantime, here's a bit about something interesting happening in Australia.

I have often thought this is such a good time to get old. When I finally get to need it, I can have a bionic eye. There is already the bionic ear, also an Australian invention, by the company Cochlear. And I think Oscar Pistorius, the Blade Runner's, bionic legs look really cool. From an investment banker's point of view, I think medical biotech stocks will offer some of the most interesting future growth potential. One company I am keeping an eye on is Australian company Mesoblast, in the forefront of regenerative (think stem cells, but without the ethical issues) medicine. And for men, apparently, there's help coming to put the spring back into his (failing) er....step....

Well I am trying the Eye again. Last time I left I was quite happy to be doing so and what with the death of good articles, this incarnation may be short.

Technically there was no bionic eye in Blade Runner. That came from the short-live TV show :Six Million Dollar Man:.

Hello SF. Seems we've not interacted in a several months of Sundays.

Wow!! What a pleasure to see you here Karma!! Hope you've been well. I hope you'll stay, we've lost quite a few old faces, though gained some new ones. Surely you will have some interesting insights in today's topic?

BTW, I meant Blade Runner, Oscar Polaris, "the fastest man with no legs", who made history as the first double amputee to compete in track and field at the London Olympics. I've been thinking, what is the opposite to his quote, "Being disabled doesn't have to be a disadvantage"?

I agree with you Spring, We may be living in  a great time to be older.  However, I think we need to work on a biononic chip for the brain or a vaccine for dementia.  Dementia seems to be the most unavaiodable and untreatable health issue of the baby boomers and the next few generations.

OH Julia! ... lol.....your post reminded me of this funny quote,"

There is more money being spent on breast implants and Viagra than Alzheimer's research. By the year 2020, there should be a large elderly population with perky breasts, never-ending erections, and no recollection of what to do with either of them.

Spring 7:37 how true hahahhA LOVED IT!! tHANK YOU ALL FOR THE WONDERFUL CONGRATS ON MY BOOK SIGNING, I CANNOT EXPRESS HOW YOU MADE ME FEEL, NICE:). I work at a gym and its focus is on Baby Boomers, while any ages can join. I work with a totally BLIND 83 yr old woman who founded "The Blind Center" I am so happy that they are doing research, for this area of our life SIGHT is a vital part of quality of life. There are workshops where they cover your eves totally and you have to see what it is like to be totally blind, give a new perspective. Most people have NO COMPASSION for the disabled, sad but true.

MISS KORTHAL:    The idea ... is to continue forever getting  Older  ... without ever getting, OLD !!!   Old, is when they pat you in the face with a shovel ... RESIST the, "Inevitable" as it is called ... cuz it just isn't so ... Resist in Your Spirit, Resist in Your Mind, and you will soon succeed at Resisting in your Body ...

It all starts in the Mind ... Attitude is the Key ... accompanied by Positive Confession ...

Welcome back Karma. I was hoping you would return. I'm so glad Peter Lake is checking in as well.  You two are both great!!!! I went "blind" when I was 25. I had cataracts. But with the technology available then and now, my sight is better than 20/20 with lens implants and glasses.  Thank goodness for modern medicine.  As far as everything else goes, I agree with Korthal that getting old does S*&K, but it is better than the alternative, as they say.  So far, all my other equipment, besides my eyes, is original.    I did read an article somewhere about a man who had surgery and got sight after being blind his whole life. It said that becoming sighted can be very hard on people and not always good. He had face blindness--couldn't recognize people by their faces, and had other issues as well.

Greetings:  KSS!!!  Ahoy Mr. S!  Glad to know we're all here (cause we're not all there).  I'm still in the same place as I was, just not doing the same thing.  Starting over as folks say, trying to stay afloat.  Yeh, I have been absent for quite some time now but trying to get my feet wet here again. North Carolina says hello.  Being Labor Day weekend at the beach and all, one can observe there is a fine line between a "terrorist" and a "tourist".

Geordi La Forge's signature VISOR provided sight and made a fashion statement. His dad Edward M. La Forge, a renowned exozoologist purchased it from J Peterman's Spring Catalog in 2336 using his Intergalactic Express card. These topics transcend space and time.

Hello, Karma! I'm new here, but I can already see one thing we have in common. Welcome back! DO STAY!

Captn, BEST of luck to you and the monkeys~~ The greatest thing about do-overs is that you can be the person you wanted to be last time...only better!

Jalopkin~May I quote you from now on?! That's epic! "You're not old until they pat you in the face with a shovel" ...Good advice...and more good advice, RoadYacht, that I WILL take to mind about driving slower (one more ticket & I'll be ditching the old jag for the old nag)!!

MANY THANKS for the kind words and concern regarding my little run with the West Nile Virus. From my understanding, it can be quite common and most people recover without even knowing they've contracted it. I worked in research and development for animal pharmaceutics after college so I was familiar with encephalitic symptoms in cattle therefore I knew I was in trouble when I felt the symptoms develop in my spine, then move to my joints, and develop a rash?! I have a lot of faith in my doctor. I'm blessed to have a caregiver who takes the time to listen and know her patients rather than treating people like a number or an animal. She knew when I told her I thought something was really wrong that I was sick. And she was aggressive in treatment. I have slept all but 8 of the last 24 hours...and felt much less pain! My plan is just to sleep it off.
Enjoy what's left of your weekend!

Peter Lake:  Yeah, my gallant crew, Monkeys 1 & 2, stayed firm and tight (although with many questions) throughout this crazy chapter.  Things are different...but we're still tacking and jibing.  Monkey #1 and I spent the entire day today swimming in the Atlantic.  The water was amazingly clear and the waves perfect.  Now we're watching baseball and playing Scrabble.
