I've gone to my farm in Kentucky for the weekend. It's a great place to relax, do a little hard physical labor, and forget about the rest of the world. If you don't have such a place, I highly suggest you get one.

In the meantime, what direction do your eyes move while speaking?

W T T W....the EyEs are the "Window to the World"...and some times those windows need cleaning....truth is better received with that 'third EyE', the empathic one, we all have it....   When you 'just know' some one is trying to pull one over on you ("Yes, Honey, Santa DOES still love you, he just didn't have a red bike for you"), but you want to believe anyway....and so you make do with a string that you pull behind you, making the rrrrring rrring sound of the handlebar bell that your neighbor got on HER RED bike....knowing that she cried REAL LOUD when she fell and scraped her knees, but you didn't....and besides, you can take your string/red bike, upstairs and into your bed where it is safe...and she has to leave hers in the garage, all by itself,lonely....hahahahaha

I think that the research reported in the Huffington Post is wrong. Never mind what direction the eyes swivel, before there was any science on the topic, a person with "a shifty eyed look" was deemed to be untrustworthy. Even Floyd and his kin  when caught out in naughtiness will get the guilty dog rolling eyes  thing .... loads of examples on YouTube.

I remember seeing a TV special some time ago that showed that when people lie there was a wrinkle in the forehead, a momentary tensing.  They showed a number of videos, including some where they knew the person was lying and this brief tensing showed up consistently.  They even showed videos of the same person at other times and it did not.  One of the subjects was Nixon which made it interesting.  Another was John Kennedy.  The lies were known from what happened later.  Evidently the FBI uses this when interrogating people.  They film them and look for the wrinkle to appear.

Law enforcement people whose jub it is to gather information from people whose credibility is at issue have a protocol that they use to determine who's being truthful and who's evasive in their responses. Good detectives and the best profilers are quick to acknowledge, however, that there are no "one size fits all" answers. People often give blended answers, responses comingling truth & fabrications. Then there's the entire science of selective perception, meaning that although it seems counter-intuitive most eyewitness testimony is highly unreliable. Furthermore psychopathic deviates, devoid of the limitations imposed by having a conscience, are less likely to be uncomfortable stating falsehoods. Drug & alcohol ingestion as well as active mental illness skewer responses, so much so that good polygraph experts insist that the sublect first give a blood sample for testing. When we comment online, our audience is deprived of critical body language that we otherwise all use to help determine when someone is serious, joking, prevaricating, or straightforward. We don't even know with mathematical precision whether or not Peterman really exists, or if "he" in fact is a subcontractor. Aaarrrggghhh!!!

I used to have coffee across the street from our building, in Omaha, with a man who was well known internationally for being able to beat any polygraph protocol and every inquisitor even the FBI.
Two seasoned policeman ganged up on him and wound up fighting each other. There was a wager involved.
He was not well liked by the experts, in fact, they really despised him but I didn't.

When enough bank employees, of which I was one, refused  proposed lie detector tests, the idea was dropped in favor of interviews… long and penetrating interviews by an outside outfit.
It was intense and painful for almost everybody and risky for some who had over-burnished their QVs.
I had a bet, several actually, that my interview on a Friday afternoon would be over in under fifteen minutes.
It had a little something to do with my walking over to the window and pointing out that the guy's car was being towed by my friend Joel.
He bolted.
It was just luck that his files and the shredder chute were so handy to each other.
The interesting part was that under a blanket in the back of his wagon were cases of non-taxed cigarettes.
He retrieved his brief case and watch but never returned.
Oddly, I had nothing to hide.

Well, saying you know when you are being lied to is like saying you always recognize a hairpiece or falsies.
Not really.
Then, there is the acceptance of unsubstantiated statements by others because you happen to approve… you become a party to that lie.
Chatting with someone so obviously on the lookout for physical quirks or inconstancies is probably something many persons would notice and seek to avoid.

Good thoughts to ruminate upon, RY and Bert -- I think I agree with those comments....and Hazel who reminds us that "shifty eyed" is so named for a reason. Some liars are not sophisticated enough to stare you in the eyes as they lie, but seasoned ones are. I have dealt with teens in many yrs. teaching, and some could lie with a straight face, while others might grin and give themselves away. Glancing away when telling a person some information, generally means the speaker is either having trouble remembering or making it up, in my experience.

As for myself, I learned long ago that it is easier to remember the truth, no matter how unpleasant or how much the listener does not want to hear it, than it is to make up an untruth and then try to remember what you told! Just tell the truth and try to live so that the truth is something you can live with!

I'd bet that most of the folks who post here are in the Land of True Living. Except for the obvious flights of fancy in the Sepia Train, petting Floyd, and partaking of each other's daily sumptuous cooking!

I don't know what it says that I agree with BERT and STONEY in whole, and, in part, with several others.  Even the mutable is immutable; the immutable, mutable. Circumstances and relativity color what we do, see, think, dream....  No sooner have I decided "I think thus and so" than someone offers a position I can't ignore, and must incorporate.

Thus my eyes probably shift and shift. And shift, from nervousness at the situation.  In a recent "60 Minutes," Leslie Stahl interviewed authororities about the accuracy of identification using lineups vs. polygraphs. She participared, and was stunned when she failed both, which unsurprised police said is average.

For awhile there was a project to make faces out of mundane parts of the world by using goggly eyes.  Some 'faces' turned out to be very clever....it's actually called Eye-bombing and you can do a search and find some of the very creative ways of making things seems almost human with the application of googly-eyes.         I'm still thinking on the real topic of the day....oops! my eyes may have just for a second glanced away as I said that.

...and then there are relativity arguments.....you are sitting in a restaurant...the wait person comes by and hands you a menu, and maybe water, and says "Hello, I'll be right back to take your order..."  Now, for the hour you are there, that is your wait person. BUT, and this is important, you are sitting at on of five tables that are the responsibility of that person, and four of those may actually change occupants in the hour you are there. My point? That is YOUR wait person for the whole hour, but YOU may occupy only six,to eight minutes (in total) of THEIR hour.   Both things are true, but vastly different from point of view.

p- I sold used cars when I was in between institutions of higher learning one summer. Our warranty was 30 feet or 30 seconds whichever comes first. We sold payments not sales price. It apparently bled over into the real estate market. When I got enough money I was off to Aspen. Anyhow the really good salesmen could look you in the eye and make you believe anything they said. Kind of like TIn Men with Danny DeVito...

And then there is Casey Anthony, who lied like a satin smooth rug day in and day out, and she showed none of the 'typical' signs of lying.  Even though she couldn't open her mouth without saying a whopper.   Some people are just good at lying, like her.  Consistency is unimportant, looking to the left or right or wrinkling between the eyes or cying dry tears - none of it matters if you've got lying in your blood like she does.  That jury of 12 ("some florida village is missing 12 idiots" as it was said)- saw her as she wanted them to see her.  Liar liar.  I'll go to my grave wondering what happened to our jury system in that trial.  I wish her nose would have grown with each lie, I'd love to see what she'd look like if that would happen...

Yeah, lets tread easily on the used car sellers.  My grampa sold used cars in Arizona, after the war (II) he had a big lot (I saw pictures) of cars, and a whole lot of left over Army vehicles.  If I hadn't been only of carpet crawler age- it would have been my big chance to get a jeep, an actual used Willy of my own.  I'd still have it today, I would.  Those and Woodys are my favorites when it comes to getting from here to there and back again, if that's the plan.

The current book by the Casey Anthony attorney, says she was half out of it, and was covering up for her parents...her dad being the one who found the drowned child and decided to cover up her death.....The attorney has been on several talk shows lately....The dad was a former policeman, so knew the drill, and he apparently told Casy (a good time girl with no common sense and no maternal instincts at all) "he would take care of it."

So, in her ignorance, is she totally responsible? Sounds like she was never a mother to that child, and just felt the kid was an impediment to her social life....Dad and wife were taking care of the girl, but she drowned in the family pool and the dad covered up by burying her like her had buried lots of family pets in the past....same exact method.....oh, how cheaply a child's life was held....Casey was herself a child like kid with no sense of parental duty. Wonder if she shifted her eyes when they questioned her....??
