I've gone to my farm in Kentucky for the weekend. It's a great place to relax, do a little hard physical labor, and forget about the rest of the world. If you don't have such a place, I highly suggest you get one.
In the meantime, here is an interesting read.
J. Peterman
From:Huffington Post
Well, of course. A cup of tea always does the trick.
So does looking rapidly from side to side. It seems that engages both sides of the brain, and will also disspell fear, and possibly control seasickness. It was discovered by NASA, in a simple experiment that spun a person in an ordinary office chair, but it was the when the EyE movement was rapid, trying to lock onto something in the spinning object field, that the phenomenom was noticed, and later studied. Quite a neat trick, really.
Where is Jane? We are having some of that lemony french cake today. What is it called?
Is that a mind pop Paolos? I was just thinking the same thing today! Where is Jane?
On the article, at first I thought, “Oh! So that’s what it’s called! But the more I read, the more skeptical I got. She was recording like 1 incident per day during a summer, and once she decided to do a statistical collection, behold! She was recording almost 1 ½ such thoughts per day over nine months! Meaningful mind pops don’t happen so often; mostly, I have a continual conversation with myself and they may have rehashed thoughts and words but I wouldn’t call them mind pops. It has always been a problem with some researchers, if you look hard enough you will always find it. So, sorry, I think her work is flaky
On mind pops, I do not believe the brain is ever random; it is always searching to make sense of its world. It seeks out patterns and arrangements, and while our left brain dominates most of the time for most of us, the right brain works these best. I believe that even our dreams are not random. For the right brain’s function, I think there should be wriggle room to include intuition, the inexplicable, discernment and the mysterious, such as how I got a mind pop that my unborn child would be a boy and that his name would be Nicholas. It sat with me for the entire term and when he was born, his nicked-ears (across one lobe) confirmed his name
I got nothing... I'll pop back in if I come up with anything!
My own mind-pop a carbonated luxury was opened as my Proust-like daughter Madeleine a cupcake brought her boyfriend, Paul, to town on Saturday to attend the East Nashville Tomato Festival, she in costume with her red hair and red cowboy boots and red PT Cruiser stickered up to save the world. I made waffles and covered them in fresh strawberries with bacon and link sausages swimming in syrup my gastronomic tribute. Although she will be 21 in a few months, as she told her animated stories she was 6 to me and I was that man that for a short time was a hero of Jungian proportions. It is a mental illness I long for and count as a blessing. Pop goes the old gray haired Weasel.
Haha Tommy, that's pretty funny!
Some brain games!! Some of you would have seen them, but it might be fun to revisit
The most famous one illustrating right brain vs left brain is the twirling girl. I’m definitely left brained!

Spot the sublimal messages in these famous logos!
Mr. Peterman, maybe you should have one designed and we try to spot your secret message!

Isn't this deja vu all over again?
If this is what passes for "unbiased research" in the social sciences, then count me out! Take a subject, any one will do, and I'll bet that within ten minutes you'll find some sort of "link" for it. Why? Because you are looking for one!
Do you think we should allow this sort of "research" for clinical trials of new surgeries? "The patient didn't die; therefore I conclude the surgery was a popping good success!" Of course, I amputated all four limbs when all I meant to do was remove the appendix---but the patient popped back to life!"
Why has this particular "researcher" forgotten all the research into the phenomenom of smell? Smell is much more likely to trigger childhood memories than any other sense. Heretofore unknown languages can"pop" into mind when an individual is subjected to a particular childhood scent, say for example cleaning fluid, only to discover the childhood maid spoke that language and used that cleanser!
What "poppycock!"
And while I am ranting...I HATE the new fad of using the word "pop" for everything!
Madeleines. I'll pop some in the oven.
And I will eat them CHEFD.................you luscious baker you!
PAOLOS......................I don't know the exact name, that's the chick above, that's her domain...................but we did get JANE on yesterday's post. It was short,it was sweet, but it was JAAAAAAAAAAANE! I really want a pice of that cake though.....................................
piece
I never called it mind pops, but it does remind me of part of my thinking pattern.........If I am unable to think of something, I let it go on one level, but apparently I'm still processing on another level and will most often suddenly grasp what I've been wanting to recall. I've always likened it to a pot on the stove.......I can't "get it" while it's boiling, but I put it on the back burner to simmer and it all comes together. Just like that soup or stew.
GINGER:
My whole family loves Poppycock. The original type.
I knew we'd get to food fast on the subject.
Ginger, I totally agree with you...this piece of research is baloney
That article was a public service last night. I could not sleep so I checked to see today's topic and read the article. Or attempted to read the article...next thing I know, sawing wood (presumably).
Let's all pop over to ChefDebs' and pop off about these (korthal...what is Poppycock?) poopy, er, POPPY, mind-games!
Well, popping off to that fountain!
Yesterday's discussion left me with an ear worm...I can't make it go away
http://youtu.be/PbA8CAacNZ4
open at your own risk :)
(yes, I read the article far enough to define ear worms)
Miss bebe ~ I thought that the aroma of a fish taco would bring Miss Jane to the table. I expect a little crumb of madeleine might bring her back.
A little crumb might be all that remains of ChefDeb's cakes. The Olympics are just about over, maybe Stoney will give us a full report. Mind pops are my specialty, I grew up on Sugar Pops, Tootsie Roll Pops, Popsicles, Poptarts, popcorn and the Boston Pops. Might be why the younguns call me pops.
POP ROCKS
Just for the sake of discussion, let's assume her studies are accurate...doesn't that indicate a good chance this woman is somewhat crazy?
Don't recognize the place.
Yes it does greygoose and that qualifies her for an honorary permanent residence in our little Village.
Graygoose, the piano impression in your post reminds me of the movie Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid. Did I just have a mind pop? And if so, should I call the folks with the white jackets that buckle in the back or order popcorn?
HOUSE GUEST You aren't the only one...
Mind poop?
Ha!
Only thought that popped into my head was "Pop goes the weasel." This is all rather silly.
I was standing on Westminster bridge last night
When a thought popped into my head -
What a fool I was to be standing there
When I should have been in bed.
What do the "gangstahs" on the teevee machine mean with :"Pop a cap in yo haid"?
HOUSEGUEST.....................they paved paradise & put up a parking lot................
GINGER:
Poppycock.

Great stuff.
We could hit Normandie Farm in Potomac, Maryland. They serve popovers with every order.
Going to run through of final scene of Juicy Mooshu. As Nathan Bedford Forrest VIII I find that dying on film due to a rewrite is mind popping indeed.
Penn- I vote for popcorn to carry one through the cliff jumping scene but was sad to learn the theatre butter causes Alzheimer's this week. TMI pops one's noggin.
Documentary on George Harrison (on HBO I think) reminds me that All Things Must Pass. Great work Maharishi.
Has anyone tried a bit of truffle oil on popcorn??? I don't happen to have any, but after having truffle french fries a while ago, I'm thinking it might not be too bad. Just having a hard time deciding if truffle oil in the grocery store is worth it or if I should seek a better source. But, I've had it on good authority that a bit of that magical elixir on popcorn just sends it over the edge.......
Houseguest****I agree, it looks like someone rearranged the furniture and rehung all the mirrors in here......I, personally, really really liked it before the rearranging!
Guest is usually right in his observations. He's right tonight. We need a program.
coin operated mirror still in the same place, same price, works nice
PARK, PENN, & CAROL, & KORTHAL........................hullllllllllllllllllloooooooooooooooooooooooooooo! It just got cozier. w/ you gals........................no masterpiece theater tonight, bummer..............
BEBE:
Hello to you too.
PBS has been off schedule almost all week.
Usually that's my Friday night go to. Only it wasn't there at least not what i wanted.
Let's put on our own show (that always worked for the Little Rascals)
Bebe--I'm all for cozy! Have you met your new kids yet? I'm sure you're eager to get started, yet filled with trepidation, as well. Good luck! Your school/community is certainly blessed to have you and your large heart and soul there to care and help.
When I get a mind pop, I didn't read the article, It is like a wash of information, it's really interesting, it just appears. Can't explain it easily it's like I see it in my mirror.OH well no one probably understands what I am saying, BUT that's the truth and I'm sticking to it.:} Pop Tarts anyone??
Ergo: pop tarts would be a sudden rememberance of a tart long forgotten?
Penn, I love that movie!! I like the Little Rascals too...
Tonight, I lit a candle in my cozy little abode and the smell of it reminded me of my grandfather's pipe...does that qualify as a mind pop? If so, I like it...good memories...
All this talk of rearranging furniture and mirrors has me feeling like an intruder in someone's living room.
Smoke and mirrors...another mind pop?
Today is National Bocce Day .......
It is also the Anniversary of the Births of, Fidel Castro .......
And Harvey Rendon .......
Three Good Reasons to Celebrate .......
Mornin' IVAN..................I just missed you. Bocce, the game of men w/ gorgeous noses.................ahhhhhhhhhhhhh................................
CAROL...................thank you for those very kind words...........................
Great Monday all!
You know that somewhere between a huff and a yawn that bored dogs do? Floyd just called by and rolled onto his back for a belly-scratch. Mind Pops are a regular part of my mind scenery, as are mind boggles. Sometimes, it's better to keep quiet.
I have nothing to add (still) since the topic hasn't changed, but I would like to wish a HAPPY LEFT HANDED DAY to all the leftys in the village!
www.lefthandersday.com
RY, Ha that's a good one. I love your mind.
I wish Mr. P had popped up with another topic!
Oh yes, Paolo...what a memory .... you have me pegged. Madeleines...how apropos and very tasty too. I can't get enough Proust...but madeleines...I limit myself for my own good.
Remembrance of Things Past: Swann's Way
by Marcel Proust
>And suddenly the memory returns. The taste was that of the little crumb of madeleine which on Sunday mornings at Combray (because on those mornings I did not go out before church-time), when I went to say good day to her in her bedroom, my aunt Léonie used to give me, dipping it first in her own cup of real or of lime-flower tea. The sight of the little madeleine had recalled nothing to my mind before I tasted it; perhaps because I had so often seen such things in the interval, without tasting them, on the trays in pastry-cooks' windows, that their image had dissociated itself from those Combray days to take its place among others more recent; perhaps because of those memories, so long abandoned and put out of mind, nothing now survived, everything was scattered; the forms of things, including that of the little scallop-shell of pastry, so richly sensual under its severe, religious folds, were either obliterated or had been so long dormant as to have lost the power of expansion which would have allowed them to resume their place in my consciousness. But when from a long-distant past nothing subsists, after the people are dead, after the things are broken and scattered, still, alone, more fragile, but with more vitality, more unsubstantial, more persistent, more faithful, the smell and taste of things remain poised a long time, like souls, ready to remind us, waiting and hoping for their moment, amid the ruins of all the rest; and bear unfaltering, in the tiny and almost impalpable drop of their essence, the vast structure of recollection.<
Well, after copying the above, and there were so many passages I could have copied... I decided to read the link...and there it was already..or at least the mention of it....oh well, I'm posting this anyway.
bebe.......I always love seeing you. Have a madeleine or two and think of me. I pop in and out when I can find the time. Sometimes it takes me days to finally catch up and the topic will already be closed for comments.
Spring Fragrance, I love to see your posts too. You offer a unique perspective that I find most interesting. How is your sister?
Park4, shout out from the west coast.
Korthal, yeah, I was looking forward to some Inspector Lewis, but was disappointed. Maybe next week?
JANE............................What a treat! Thanks for the lovely passage too. Hope all is well your way & I am glad you are checking in again. I do adore waking up & seeing a post w/ your name attached. How nice if we could spend the day drinking tea, eating madeleines, and talking.........................It was funny, last night we were outside in the yard & it was heading to dusk & there was a breeze& the humidity had broken and you could feel in the air the very faintest hint of the coming fall.........................it's August in Mississippi, but it WAS there..................................may your day be wonderful!
